Why Board-Certification Matters for Your Plastic Surgeon

You have many choices for your cosmetic goals, but the most crucial decision you will make is picking your plastic surgeon. Many people are surprised to find out that any physician with a medical license can practice cosmetic surgery, even if they are not board certified. That is why it is so important to make sure your surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Dr. David Bray Jr. is the only surgeon in the South Bay of Los Angeles area certified by all three of the following boards: The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) and the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS).

Medical Board Standards

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) oversees board certification for physicians in the United States. The 24 member boards, including ABPS and ABOHNS, hold doctors to high professional standards in their area of expertise and are essential in providing patients with transparency for the certification and level of training of their treating physician.

For a doctor to qualify for the American Board of Plastic Surgery certification process, they must first graduate from an accredited medical school, then complete six or seven years of residency training. After completion of training the physician will need to take a written exam. In addition, the physician will need to submit surgical cases for review and complete a rigorous oral examination.

Surgeons certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery must complete a two-day examination, undergo peer-review of their operating record (including a minimum of 100 facial plastic surgeries), be properly licensed and follow the Code of Ethics provided by the organization.

Once a physician earns board certification, they must commit to the continuous certification program that regularly verifies their professionalism, lifelong learning and knowledge.
