How Otoplasty Improves the Shape and Size of Your Ears

Many adults and children are unhappy with the appearance of their ears. Whether your ears are uneven, stick out “too far,” are misshapen due to an injury or present at birth, otoplasty can alter the ears for a more balanced appearance. Our triple-board-certified plastic surgeon in Torrance performs this procedure for individuals who are concerned with the shape of their ears.

What Can Otoplasty Do for You?

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, often addresses significant differences in ear projection and shape. Ears that project too far out from the head, or “prominent ears,” are among the most common complaints Dr. David Bray, Jr. hears from otoplasty patients. The goal is to set the ears back closer to the head. Otoplasty doesn’t move the ears away from the ear canal or affect hearing abilities, and it’s a cosmetic procedure customized to give you less pronounced and more symmetrical ears. Ear surgery can also address ears that appear too large or small.

How Otoplasty for Prominent Ears Works

Your otoplasty begins with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Bray, Jr., where he will evaluate and create a treatment plan to shape and contour your ears for a less prominent appearance. Many of our patients have a poorly defined ear that may be missing a fold, have excess cartilage and project away from the head.

Dr. Bray, Jr. will review your medical history, taking note of a history of ear infections, medications and previous surgeries. He’ll examine your ears’ projection, shape and symmetry, and discuss your otoplasty options.

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure, and Dr. Bray Jr. typically uses general anesthesia for kids. Adults may be given the option to be awake with local anesthesia. He will correct prominent ears with a customized approach to your ears’ anatomy. Sutures are used to contour the ear and secure it closer to your head, and he may remove small amounts of cartilage for better positioning near the head. Incisions are typically made in the back of your ears or concealed within the inner creases. The process often takes just a few hours, with immediately noticeable results when bandages are removed.
