Questions to Ask Your Facelift Surgeon During Your Consultation

You have done your research and decided the time is right to undergo a facelift procedure. The next step is to schedule a consultation. To make your consultation experience informative and productive, Dr. David Bray Jr. suggests asking the following questions:

What is your experience with facelift?

Inquiring about your surgeon’s experience with facelift is a good starting point. How many times has your surgeon performed facelift? How often does he or she currently perform the procedure? How does your surgeon stay up to date with advances in facelift techniques and technologies?

Are you board certified?

It is important to know your surgeons’ credentials. Make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

What type of facelift do you perform?

Not all plastic surgeons perform the same facelift procedure. Ask your surgeon why they perform the type of facelift that they perform. Ask about the advantages and disadvantages of different techniques.

Am I a good candidate for facelift?

Your plastic surgeon should evaluate your facial anatomy and concerns and recommend whether facelift or another procedure is the best course of action.

Your surgeon will also go over your health history and medical records to ensure you are healthy enough to undergo facelift.

Where and how is facelift performed?

If the two of you decide facelift is appropriate for your needs, ask about the details of the procedure including the various fees associated with surgery. Where is surgery performed? What type of anesthesia is available? Do you perform this procedure under local anesthesia? What are the possible risks and complications of facelift surgery? Inquire as to how you can minimize the surgical risks.

What can I expect during recovery?

You will need to have an idea of how long of a recovery period to expect and the activities that will be off-limits during that time. This information will help you make arrangements for recovery ahead of time. You should also understand the amount of bruising, swelling and other aftereffects that occur, so there are no surprises.

When can I expect to see results?

Although recovery and results vary by patient, your facelift surgeon should give you a general timeframe as to when you can expect your results to reveal themselves.

Do you have before and after photos?

It is essential that your surgeon show before and after facelift photographs demonstrating their results.
