Approximately 300,000 women undergo breast augmentation each year, and the number appears to be increasing. Due to the significant number of women with breast implants, breast implant revision has become a more common procedure. A patient may seek breast implant revision for a number of reasons. Some reasons include desire to change from saline to silicone, desire to change size, implant rupture, capsular contracture, and implant malposition.
The surgical plan for a breast implant revision depends on the type of problem. For example, changing size or type of implant may only require removing the old implant and replacing it with a new implant. Sometimes a capsulotomy is also required. On the other hand, more difficult revisions such as malposition may require modifications to the implant pocket as well as placement of an acellular dermis to support the implant.
