Breast Reduction Offers Dual Benefits with a Lift

Women with macromastia, or overly large breasts, often struggle with the added weight on their chest. Gravity pulls down the tissues, causing breast ptosis (drooping) for many women with a bust too big for their frame. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Bray, Jr. offers breast reduction.

How a Breast Reduction Works

Dr. Bray, Jr. removes excess skin, glandular and fatty tissue during breast reduction. The breast reduction technique and incision site depend on your anatomy and circumstances, such as how much volume you’d like to remove, breast shape and Dr. Bray’s medical advice.

There are three incision locations used for breast reduction.

  • An incision around the areola: This incision is needed to elevate and change the position of the nipple and areola.
  • A vertical incision: This incision is used to remove breast tissue and lift the lower part of the breast.
  • An inframammary fold incision: This incision is used to remove breast tissue and to reduce the distance from the inframammary fold to the nipple.

Once the excess tissues are reduced and elevated, the areola and nipple are moved to a higher position. The areolas may be reduced to match the smaller breast size. Extremely large breasts with a pendulous shape may need a free nipple graft where the areola and nipple are transplanted to a higher location.

Benefits of Breast Reduction

The stretched tissues from large, heavy breasts may be removed and adjusted when decreasing the size of the breast. Many women report improvements after breast reduction, including the ability to do more exercises and activities and wear clothing that fits their figure, not their large breasts. Breast reduction may improve back, neck and shoulder pain as well as skin rashes and infections caused by tissues rubbing together.
