Do You Need a Breast Lift With Your Breast Implants?

Gravity is inescapable. As women age, their breasts may start sagging. In addition, pregnancy and breast feeding may change the shape, size and position of breasts. As a result, some women desire an increase in breast size as well as a breast lift. Top Los Angeles triple-board certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Bray Jr. explains how combining a breast lift with the insertion of breast implants can improve the shape, size and position of the breasts.

Breast Implants

Breast implants are the critical element in breast augmentation surgery. For women whose breasts do not sag, breast implants alone will likely suffice in providing the desired aesthetic result.

Breast implants are filled with either saline or silicone. The best type of implant depends on the woman’s anatomy, size and preference.

Breast Lift

Formally known as mastopexy, a breast lift involves raising and reshaping of the natural breast tissue. When combining a breast lift with breast implants, the breasts are lifted and increased in size during the same procedure.

Breast Scarring

While a lift gives the breasts a more youthful look, there are drawbacks. A breast lift will result in a scar around the nipple. This scar may extend downwards, creating the appearance of a “lollipop” or upside-down T shape. Your surgeon will work to minimize the scarring.

How It Works

The procedure used for a breast lift with implants depends on several factors. These include:
· Breast size
· Breast shape
· Amount of lift needed

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Typically, the surgeon creates an incision around the areola, the darker skin on the breast surrounding the nipple. Depending on the amount and type of lift needed the incision may extend from the bottom of the areola to the fold where the breast meets the chest as well as along the fold under the breast.

The surgeon then lifts and reshapes the breasts to achieve the proper contour. The nipples and areolas are usually moved higher to restore a younger look. Excess skin and breast tissue may be trimmed away to make the breasts appear tighter and perkier.

Candidates for Breast Lift with Implants

You may prove to be a candidate for a breast lift with implants if any of the following apply:
· Loss of breast shape and firmness due to pregnancy, aging or weight loss
· Noticeable difference in the size and shape of the breasts
· Saggy, deflated breasts
· Nipples and areolas are pointing downward.

Those in good health with a stable body weight who do not smoke (or can quit prior to surgery) may be candidates for mastopexy with implants.
